Knights down Raiders in Region IX opener

Columbus, Neb. – Dazjanae Greene and Samantha Riggles combined for 32 points, as the Knights edged Central Community College 62-60 on Saturday afternoon to open Region IX play.

Greene's 20 points came on 10-of-17 shooting from the field, while Riggles tallied 12 points and nine rebounds against the Raiders.

A 15-3 run beginning in closing minutes of the third trickled over to the fourth quarter, as the Knights built a 51-37 lead with 7:25 to play. Central answered with a long run to take their first lead of the game on an Alyssa Reardon three pointer.

North Platte regained control of the lead, but another short spurt helped knot the game up at 60-60 inside a minute to play. Riggles broke the deadlock after receiving the ball in the post and despite heavy contact managed to get her layup to fall. Central would have one more opportunity to extend the game, but a turnover on their final possession gave the Knights the win.

North Platte shot 39.1 percent (27-69) from the field, while forcing 23 Raider turnovers in the win.

Knights (11-7, 1-0) return to the hardwood on Tuesday, Jan. 23 against Western Nebraska Community College. Tip from the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium is set for 5 p.m.
