Knights Softball wraps up regular season play

North Platte, Neb. – The North Platte Community College Knights Softball Team ended its regular season with a home doubleheader Tuesday. The Knights fell to Southeast Community College 6-5 and 18-0.

The Knights' effort to come back from down five runs in the fifth inning ended up just short in the first game.

North Platte scored three runs in the attempted comeback - a single by Janay Brauer in the sixth, a triple by Esper Lewandowski in the seventh and a groundout by Taelyn Dakamas in the seventh.

Jenny Singer was in the circle for the Knights. The pitcher went five innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, striking out four and walking zero. Dakamas threw two innings out of the bullpen.

The Knights totaled 10 hits in the game. Lewandowski, Elena Montoya and Lili Kukučková each collected two.

The Knights watched the second game slip away early after Southeast took the lead on a home run in the first inning.

Dakamas was in the circle for NPCC. The righty allowed 14 hits and 14 runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking zero. Jenny Singer threw three and a third innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Jayden Horner led the Knights with two hits in two at bats. She captured a double in the third inning.

"Game one, we adjusted too late, and game two, we just ran out of energy," said Janelle Higgins, NPCC head women's softball coach. "We had girls in new positions trying to fill gaps from broken bones and an athlete in the hospital. We have 10 days to regroup and get healthy, and I know this group will come out strong and ready to win."

The away games scheduled for Thursday against Hastings College have been canceled.

The Knights finish the regular season with a record of 5-32.
