Knights Softball surrenders doubleheader to NJC

North Platte, Neb. – The North Platte Community College softball team was defeated in its second day of competition against Northeastern Junior College. The Knights hosted doubleheaders against NJC throughout the weekend at the Dowhower Softball Complex.

On Sunday, North Platte watched the first game slip away early and couldn't recover in an 18-5 loss to the Plainsmen.

Taelyn Dakamas started things off for the Knights – singling on a 1-2 count and scoring one run. By the second inning, it was the Plainsmen who used a single to take the lead.

Angelina Lockhart was in the circle for North Platte. The righthander went five innings, allowing 17 runs on 17 hits and striking out three. Jenny Singer threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

The Knights hit two home runs on the day. Kelsey Woodhouse had a long ball in the third inning, and Cameron Rollison went for the long ball in the fifth.

Altogether, NPCC had 12 hits. Rollison, Woodhouse, Elena Montoya, Esper Lewandowski and Gwen Anderson each managed two.

North Platte sustained a 13-0 loss in the second game.

Dakamas garnered a single in the second inning, and Jayden Horner also collected a hit.

While pitching, Dakamas allowed 16 hits and 11 runs over five innings, striking out five and walking one. Jenny Singer threw one inning out of the bullpen.

The Knights are now 1-17 on the season.

"The scores were a lot closer than they appear," said Janelle Higgins, NPCC head women's softball coach. "Today was much better than yesterday and less wind helped keep normal fly balls in our small park. Our pitchers have improved on limiting their walks. Now our defense has to focus on three outs and limit runs being scored on two outs. If we do that, we have a 5-7 ball game and not a 5-18 ball game."

The Knights will travel to McCook next where they will take on McCook Community College in games starting at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. April 2.
