Softball: Raiders Win Region 9

The Central Community College softball team won the Region 9 championship over the weekend.

The Raiders began their title run with a 3-1 win over North Platte Community College on Saturday. Andrea Fernandez, Katie Paczosa and Kinsley Wimer scored CCC's runs over the fourth and fifth innings. CCC pitcher Kailee Pollard went the distance in the circle and recorded four strikeouts en route to the win.

On Sunday, CCC met Southeast Community College in the tournament's fourth game. The Storm forced a fifth game with a 4-3 victory over the Raiders. In the winner-take-all finale, the Raiders posted a 9-5 triumph over SCC to take the title.

"This was a complete team effort and the energy in the dugout was the ignition to it all," said CCC head coach Caitlin Simon, who was named Region 9 Coach of the Year. "I am proud of the team for making the plays when needed and allowing Kailee Pollard to be in control on the mound."

Fernandez, Emma Lees, Kaylee McNeese, Pollard, and Caroline Riffer were name to the All-Region 9 team. Additionally, Lees was named Region 9 Defensive Player of the Year and Riffer was named Region 9 Freshman of the Year.

Up next, the Raiders will meet the Region 11-A champion Des Moines Area Community College in the North Plains A District tournament this coming weekend. The Bears are currently the top-ranked team in NJCAA Division II softball with a record of 48-3.
