COLBY, Kan. - The new-look Trojans women's basketball team competed tough tonight in a loss to North Platte CC in a 55-48 contest.
After a slow start in the first quarter, the Trojans found their groove in the second quarter with sharp offensive execution and a stingy defensive effort. After a quick start to the third quarter, cutting the lead to one point, the Trojans again sputtered on the offensive end and costly live-ball turnovers allowed the visitors to build their lead back up to ten points. In the fourth quarter, the Trojans once again battled tough and showed signs of making a comeback before falling by seven points.
Offensive execution has been a priority for the Trojans this year, and it will take some time for this new team to find their rhythm as they work for composure and a better sense of timing. A stingy defense, something Coach Spence is well known for, will have to be the consistent calling card until our offense can get clicking.
"I am excited about how we competed and kept fighting tonight," said Coach Darin Spence. "I've heard too many times about how teams in past years would just give up, and that is something this group and new direction will not experience. You may beat us on the scoreboard this year, but you will not outwork us and outscrap us. We are a work in progress, and soon we will be much better as our offensive flow continues to improve. Until then, each of us needs to ramp up our investment level and make the name on the front of the jersey actually mean something. We will get there."
The Trojans are back in action on Sunday for a 2 p.m. tip at the Colby Event Center when they host the Bethany College JV.
