McDonald-Belton Gymnasium

The McDonald-Belton gymnasium located on the North Platte Community College South Campus, was built in 1973 with a seating capacity of approximately 1,600.

Although the primary use of the facility is for students at North Platte Community College. The Knights athletic programs typically host up to 12 volleyball games, 12 women’s basketball games and 14 men’s basketball games each year. 

Additionally, the gymnasium serves and hosts some of the most popular youth activities in west central Nebraska, including high school volleyball and basketball tournaments, youth athletic events and camps.

Educational events also bring educational events also bring MPCC students to the gymnasium each year. Annual cultural and community activities draw additional visitors to Kid’s Discover, Academic All Stars, public speakers and music concerts.

Beginning in April of 2009, Mid-Plains Community College kicked off a $2 million, three – phase remodeling project in the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium. 

Phase one updated and converted two locker rooms into four, created new officials’ quarters, a laundry facility, training rooms and offices. 

Phase Two was completed in 2014 and completed the balcony area on the east side of the gymnasium. It included an updated fitness center and a new VIP conference room. The new fitness center features numerous cardio machines such as state-of-the-art treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bicycles, free weights, and nautilus machines. The expanded area will give students and athletes at NPCC the equipment required for college level competition an Personal physical fitness. New coaches’ offices were also added.

The third phase began in the spring of 2015 with the replacement of the 40-year-old bleachers. The new bleachers provide more leg room, better railing support, and comply with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act. A total of 250 chairs with backs designed to enhance the viewing experience, were sold as a fundraiser.

The final portion of the project will be remodeled trophy cases, an updated snack bar space and a possible athletic Hall of Fame recognition area.
