North Platte, Neb.– The North Platte Community College women's basketball team opened their regular season on Friday with a 78-63 loss to Laramie County Community College.
Ligia Thortvedt led the Knights with 12 points, while Abigail Haas added 11. Jasmine Gilbert contributed on the defensive end, collecting three steals.
North Platte started strong, jumping out to a 6-2 lead after a free throw from Kyenna Jackson. However, the Knights went cold offensively, allowing Laramie to take control and end the first quarter ahead 14-8.
The Knights found some rhythm in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to three at 22-19. Laramie responded with a run to extend its lead, heading into halftime up 39-25. The Golden Eagles capitalized on their opportunities, converting 10 of 19 free throws in the first half.
The third quarter was evenly matched, with both teams scoring 18 points to maintain the 14-point gap. Laramie opened the fourth with back-to-back baskets before the Knights made a late push. Two free throws from Reece Yahn sparked a 9-2 run, but the Golden Eagles managed to hold off the rally, outscoring the Knights by one in the final frame to earn the win.
Knights (0-1) return to action on Saturday against Eastern Wyoming College. Tip is set for 1 p.m. inside the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.
