Second half surge lifts Golden Eagles over Knights

North Platte, Neb. – Laramie County Community College knocked down five second-half three pointers to aid in an 83-66 win over North Platte on Saturday afternoon.

Samantha Riggles led all Knights scorers with 14 points, while teammates Mariah Gardner and Jada Grigsby each closed out the game with 13 points, respectively.

North Platte fell behind in the opening 7:02 but rallied to cut the deficit to one after some tough defense generated a layup in transition by Chrishelle Washington. The Golden Eagles stretched the margin to 18-16 after connecting on the front end of two free throw opportunities to close the quarter.

The margin grew to seven inside the opening two minutes of the second quarter, before another rally capped off by a Grigsby layup cut the deficit to one possession. Over the next 3:24 the Golden Eagles pushed the margin to six, but a brief 4-3 run helped pull North Platte back within five at the halftime break.

North Platte once again attacked the Golden Eagles lead and cut the deficit down to 37-35 after a three pointer from Grigsby. Laramie County found their rhythm on offense over the final 8:37 of the quarter while extending their lead to 62-44.

Golden Eagles lead was insurmountable in the final quarter, as they matched the Knights bucket for bucket and put the finishing touches on their win.

Knights (2-10) will look to get back on track prior to the long break, as they square off with Otero Junior College on the opening day of the Hampton Inn Classic on Friday, Dec. 9. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. inside the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.
