The DMACC women's basketball team stands 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after splitting a pair of road games November 29 and 30.
Sophomore Mary Walker of Fonda scored 21 points in an 87-64 loss to North Platte Community College (NPCC) Nov. 29 at North Platte, Neb., and Walker, sophomore Joy Beran of Riceville and freshman Whitney Jensen of Remsen had 14 points apiece as DMACC opened ICCAC play with a 77-46 win over Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Nov. 30 at Creston.
NPCC led throughout the game in its win over DMACC. The Knights had a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and were up 36-30 at halftime. They held a 61-50 lead at the end of the third quarter and outscored the Bears 26-14 in the final period to come away with the win.
DMACC, ranked 23rd in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), shot 35 percent, making 22 of 63 field goal attempts. The Bears were 5-of-22 from three-point range and 15-of-21 from the free throw line.
Beran had eight rebounds and freshman Kaylee Stratton of Tiffin had five as DMACC came away with a 45-42 advantage on the boards. Stratton and freshman Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids led the Bears in steals with two apiece.
DMACC led SWCC 17-14 at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Spartans 18-8 in the second period to take control of the game. The Bears were ahead 50-37 at the end of the third quarter and used a 27-point fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
DMACC shot 29 percent, making 26 of 90 field goal attempts. The Bears were 11-of-33 from three-point range and 14-of-19 from the free throw line.
DMACC came away with a 56-38 advantage in rebounding with Beran's 10 rebounds leading the way. Freshman Hanna Wagenbach of Burlington had seven rounds, Walker and freshman Aunasia Dunn of Kansas City, Mo., came away with six apiece and Clayburg added five. Stratton led the Bears in assists with five and she, Dunn and freshman Reese Stevens of Tulsa, Okla., had two steals apiece.
The DMACC women's basketball team will host Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) on Dec. 4. NECC is 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the ICCAC.
